Wellbeing
We believe that the pastoral care of children contributes greatly to their overall wellbeing and also to their academic achievement.
We work closely with Kirklees’ MHST (mental health support team) overseen by the Education Psychologist and our staff have accessed their training.
At Boothroyd, we are very fortunate to have a pastoral unit with an outdoor chill out area and relaxation zone.
We believe in promoting positive mental health and emotional wellbeing to ensure that the school is a community where everyone feels able to thrive. We know that everyone experiences life challenges that can make us vulnerable and at times, anyone may need additional emotional support. We take the view that positive mental health is everybody’s business and that we all have a role to play.
Meet the team:
Gail Swaine - pastoral leader
Zahida Ahmed - parent liaison officer with responsibility for attendance
Piper - our pastoral cat
If you have any concerns about yourself or your child in the first instance please contact Mrs Gail Swaine, our Pastoral Leader, who will be happy to help.
Why have therapy animals at Boothroyd?
- Having animals to care for ties in with the school curriculum of emotional and social needs – empathy, care, love, compassion, understanding, commitment and building confidence
- Pets can encourage a child’s learning needs, especially in reading, communication, observation and speaking. This is a useful tool when teaching all children but can be particularly helpful for those with special educational needs (SEN).
- They can help children with behavioural needs as time with the pets can be used as a reward
- For many children, it will be their only contact with a pet as they don’t have them at home
