RE
At Boothroyd Primary Academy, we take great pride in recognising the school’s culturally diverse community. As a result, we belief it is fundamentally important for our children to learn about a range of cultures and faiths, enabling them to have respect and tolerance for all. Furthermore, it supports our children to understand different views, meanings and beliefs through asking questions so they can have a more cohesive understanding of the world.
We follow the Kirklees Agreed RE Syllabus to support our delivery.
- Know about and understand a range of religions and worldviews, so that they can: describe, explain and analyse beliefs and practices, recognising the diversity which exists within and between communities and amongst individuals;
- Identify, investigate and respond to questions posed, and responses offered by some of the sources of wisdom* found in religions and worldviews;
- Appreciate and appraise the nature, significance and impact of different ways of life and ways of expressing meaning.
- Express ideas and insights about the nature, significance and impact of religions and worldviews, so that they can:
- Explain reasonably their ideas about how beliefs, practices and forms of expression influence individuals and communities;
- Express with increasing discernment their personal reflections and critical responses to questions and teachings about identity, diversity, meaning and value, including ethical issues;
- Appreciate and appraise varied dimensions of religion or a worldview.
- Gain and deploy the skills needed to engage seriously with religions and worldviews, so that they can:
- Find out about and investigate key concepts and questions of belonging, meaning, purpose and truth, responding creatively;
- Enquire into what enables different individuals and communities to live together respectfully for the wellbeing of all;
- Articulate beliefs, values and commitments clearly in order to explain why they may be important in their own and other people’s lives.
The National Curriculum for RE offers distinctive opportunities to promote children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development with links to other curriculum areas. In addition to this foundational layer, the Kirklees Agreed Syllabus is designed with a commitment to weave two key drivers consistently throughout the learning journey of our children from EYFS to Year 6: Believing and Belonging.
Believing - Our children will explore their own and others beliefs and values. It aims to develop pupils’ understanding of religions and worldviews, exploring their commonality and diversity. Furthermore, it supports the children to think critically about world events.
Belonging - The driver ‘belonging’ develops children’s awareness of the treasury of diversity as well as sensitivity to the questions and challenges that different views and cultures can present. Ultimately, we all share a common humanity and share this patch of the Earth. In this way it plays a part in helping pupils to discover their own place and journey through life.
These Kirklees Agreed Syllabus drivers define our RE approach at Boothroyd.
At Boothroyd, we will ensure our school is a safe, nurturing place to express opinions, thoughts and feelings and learn from others who might have a different point of view. We encourage visits to local places of worship as this is an important part of deepening a child’s understanding and making links to previous or current learning.
