Modern Languages
At Boothroyd, we belief learning a different language provides children with opportunity to explore relationships between language and identity, develop a deeper understanding of other cultures and the world around them. The intention is that they will be working towards becoming life-long language learners and participate in multilingual communities at home and around the world.
We recognise that for the large majority of our pupils, this will be the third language they will learn with many of our pupils learning English as their second language. Boothroyd’s contextual data shows that over 20 languages are spoken at home. Therefore, we have carefully considered which language we offer (French) as part of our Modern Foreign Language curriculum requirement and how learning links can be made to other areas of the curriculum.
We have chosen the ‘Language Angels – French scheme’ to deliver our Modern Foreign Language curriculum. Our curriculum is built on the foundations of distilled versions of the key aims in the National Curriculum that are readily accessible and pertinent:
- Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
- Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
- Can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
- Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.
In addition to this foundational layer, our curriculum is designed with a commitment to weave four key drivers consistently throughout the learning journey of our children from Year 3 to Year 6:
listening,
speaking,
reading
writing
culture
The Language Angel’s curriculum drivers define our MfL approach at Boothroyd to ensure a broad and balanced MfL curriculum is delivered where every child will progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary, language skills and grammatical knowledge organised around age-appropriate topics and provides building blocks of language into more complex, fluent and authentic language. Therefore, creating a cohesive, meaningful narrative where each block of learning builds on the previous and paves the way for the next.
The Language Angels curriculum (years 3-6) will study MFL simultaneously. This innovative approach enables us to use our school resources and professional development time more effectively. It provides opportunities for staff to collaborate in planning, facilitates in-lesson support, and simplifies the process of monitoring subjects.
