Personal Development
At Boothroyd Primary Academy, we firmly believe that we are a school ‘where we all shine brightly’. In line with this, we have developed a Personal Development (PD) that encompasses the principles of PSHE, SMSC, Citizenship and RSE. We believe that Personal Development should be a thread throughout the whole curriculum, which is why our curriculum design has Personal Development at the 'HEART' of our pedagogy. Our approach to Personal Development enables all our children to develop their own skills, knowledge and understanding of how to be who they are, understand the world they are growing up in and how to keep themselves safe in all areas of their world. With these skills and knowledge, our children will be able to adapt to the ever-changing world that they live in.
Why do we teach Personal Development at Boothroyd?
Our intent, throughout everything that we do, is to nurture happy, healthy, resilient and confident young people, who have the knowledge, academic achievement and strength of character to lead safe and successful lives in modern Britain. We want our children to be valued citizens and make an impact to society. We ensure that every member of our school community knows that we are committed to supporting their physical health, emotional wellbeing and safety.
A core aim of our Personal Development curriculum is to reflect our school’s vision and values (HEART). Children will learn about the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up, relationships, sex, human sexuality and sexual health. Personal Development is taught in the context of relationships and promotes self-esteem and emotional health and wellbeing to encourage children to form healthy and meaningful relationships, based on respect for themselves and for others. We firmly believe in working in partnership with parents and carers so that the child’s physical, moral, mental wellbeing and emotional development can be supported at home.
How do we implement Personal Development at Boothroyd?
Our entire curriculum is designed with researched pedagogy and with Personal Development at the very backbone. Personal Development is the ‘golden thread’ that runs through the curriculum and is an integral part of everything we do at Boothroyd. As well as Personal Development seamlessly flowing through our curriculum, it is also taught as a structured lesson, once a week across all year groups.
Along with a strong curriculum that embeds Personal Development and a designated PHSE, SMSC and RSE curriculum, we support Personal Development further, by ensuring that we have specific enhancements, that are suited to support our children and our community. Our enhancements are an addition and enable our children at Boothroyd to become happy, healthy, resilient and confident characters within society.
Our enhancements include:
•Enrichment
•Cultural
•Health, safety and wellbeing
•Physical Health
•Transition
•Pastoral support
Along with our enhancements, we also have a unique addition to our curriculum – ‘7 Musts of Focus Trust and Boothroyd Musts’. Working with our school parliamentarians, we devised a list of experiences that we felt all children deserved to partake in throughout their learning journey at Boothroyd. These experiences can be accessed within class as part of a lesson, special curriculum events, school trips and residentials. Our experiences are based on what the children felt, as children, they deserved to experience.
See our ‘Personal Development overview’ document to see what each year group are doing for all areas within Personal Development.

At Boothroyd, we have adopted the SCARF programme to deliver our Personal Development curriculum, on a weekly basis. The SCARF programme has been carefully chosen to ensure our curriculum complies with the new RSE statutory requirements, along with ensuring we deliver SMSC and British Values.
The SCARF programme enables our children to develop and build their skills and knowledge, year on year, with each new topic building on the previous one.
Within the SCARF curriculum there are 6 key themes/drivers which are taught within every year group. These are:
•Me and my relationships
•Valuing difference
•Keeping myself safe
•Rights and responsibilities
•Being my best
•Growing and changing •
British Values and Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) along with RSE are carefully woven throughout the SCARF curriculum. This enables our children to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors.
How do we monitor Personal Development at Boothroyd?
Throughout the children’s time at Boothroyd, we continually measure the impact of our Personal Development offer in many ways, including:
